EMDR has been validated by decades of research as one of the most effective therapies for trauma and PTSD — with lasting results after just 6-12 sessions for many clients.

Your brain already knows how to heal. EMDR helps it finish the job.

Unprocessed memories are like background apps running in your mind — you may not notice them, but they drain your energy, focus, and peace. They shape how you react, what triggers you, and the patterns you can't seem to break. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses gentle bilateral stimulation — eye movements, tapping, or tones — to help your brain sort through those open tabs. The memory stays. The emotional charge fades. That's when freedom begins.

01

Rooted in neuroscience

EMDR works with your brain's natural healing process — the same one that happens during REM sleep. Bilateral stimulation activates both hemispheres, letting stuck memories process the way they were meant to.

02

Goes deeper than talk

Talk therapy asks you to describe what happened. EMDR helps you process it. You don't have to keep telling the story — your brain does the work, often faster and more thoroughly than words alone can reach.

03

Built to end treatment

Our goal isn't a lifelong client — it's a lasting breakthrough. Most clients complete EMDR and don't need to come back. 95% of clients in our intensive programs never require therapy again.

Whatever you're carrying, EMDR can help clear it.

EMDR isn't just for "big-T" trauma. Over 25 years of research show it works for a wide range of patterns that feel impossible to shift with talk therapy alone.

Trauma & PTSD

Flashbacks, hypervigilance, and feeling stuck in survival mode after difficult experiences.

Anxiety & Panic

Racing thoughts, panic attacks, and constant worry that won't respond to coping strategies.

Depression

When everything feels heavy or pointless, and the usual approaches haven't brought relief.

Grief & Loss

Loss that keeps pulling you back to the worst moments, even after years have passed.

Addictions

Behaviors that feel automatic, driven by old pain you've been trying to numb or outrun.

Phobias & Fears

Specific fears — flying, driving, medical procedures — that limit your everyday life.

Self-Worth

Core beliefs like "I'm not enough" or "I don't matter" that persist no matter what you achieve.

First Responders

What you've witnessed and carried. Specialized EMDR for police, fire, EMS, military, and medical.

Your EMDR journey at CARE.

EMDR follows a proven 8-phase protocol, but we've distilled it into what you'll actually experience — step by step.

1

We learn what's been weighing on you

Your first session is an in-depth conversation. Your therapist identifies the memories, beliefs, and body sensations driving your symptoms — and builds a treatment plan with measurable goals.

2

We build your resources

Before we go near hard material, we make sure you have what you need to stay grounded. Calm techniques, safe-place imagery, and the skills to regulate yourself during and between sessions.

3

We target the root memories

Through focused EMDR sessions using bilateral stimulation, we reprocess the specific memories fueling your symptoms. You don't have to keep retelling the story — your brain does the work.

4

The charge fades — and stays faded

As processing completes, confidence, calm, and clarity replace the emotional weight. What used to trigger you stops triggering you. Not temporarily. Permanently.

5

We end treatment — and you move on

Most clients complete EMDR and don't need to come back. That's our goal. You leave with the tools, clarity, and freedom to live the life you want — without us.

We don't just "do EMDR" — we practice it like a specialty. Because when it's done well, the difference is life-changing.
— The CARE EMDR Standard

Not all EMDR therapy is created equal.

Many therapists complete a basic EMDR training and add it to their list of offerings. At CARE, we treat EMDR as a specialty — which means our therapists invest 40+ hours a year in advanced techniques, study European-style approaches that the U.S. is still catching up on, and collaborate as a team on complex cases.

  • 01Advanced training, always40+ hours a year per therapist in European-style EMDR techniques — far beyond the basic certification most practitioners stop at.
  • 02A collaborative team of 100+Complex cases benefit from the collective expertise of our entire team. You get the skills of a specialty practice, not one solo therapist.
  • 03Focused on finishingWe don't believe in therapy that goes on forever. Every session has a purpose. Every treatment plan has a finish line.
  • 04Intensive EMDR optionsFor clients ready to move fast, we offer intensive EMDR packages — 8 hours of focused work over 1-4 weeks, often completed in evenings or weekends.

What is EMDR therapy and how does it work?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain reprocess painful memories so they lose their emotional grip. Using bilateral stimulation — gentle eye movements, tapping, or tones — your therapist guides you through focused sessions that help the brain do what it was built to do: heal. The memory stays, but the emotional charge fades.
How long does EMDR therapy take?
Most clients notice meaningful shifts within weeks, not years. At CARE, our goal-oriented approach is designed for efficient results — most clients complete treatment and don't need to return. Simple concerns may resolve in 6-12 sessions; complex trauma may take longer. We also offer intensive EMDR packages (8 hours over 1-4 weeks) for clients seeking faster results.
What conditions does EMDR treat?
EMDR is effective for trauma and PTSD, anxiety and panic disorders, depression, grief and loss, phobias, addictions, low self-worth, and emotional patterns that feel stuck. Over 25 years of research has proven EMDR helps people resolve issues of many kinds, often faster than traditional talk therapy — and the results last.
Does EMDR therapy actually work?
Yes — EMDR is one of the most well-researched therapies in mental health, endorsed by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as a first-line treatment for PTSD. At CARE, 95% of clients who complete our intensive programs never require therapy again.
Do you accept insurance for EMDR therapy?
Yes — CARE Counseling accepts 20+ insurance plans for EMDR therapy across New Hampshire and Massachusetts. If we don't accept your specific insurance, you may be eligible for HSA payment or out-of-network reimbursement. Contact us to verify your plan before booking.
How is EMDR at CARE different from other practices?
Our therapists don't just complete basic EMDR training — they invest 40+ hours annually in advanced, European-style EMDR techniques. We treat EMDR as a specialty, not a side offering. With 100+ EMDR-trained therapists and a collaborative team approach, every client benefits from our collective expertise on even the most complex cases.
Is EMDR available at all CARE locations?
Yes. EMDR therapy is available at all four CARE locations — Manchester NH, Concord NH, Nashua NH, and Haverhill MA — as well as virtually via secure HIPAA-compliant telehealth for clients throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Can EMDR be done virtually?
Yes. Virtual EMDR is just as effective as in-person for most clients and offers significantly more flexibility. Your therapist will guide you through the same bilateral stimulation process using your device's screen or audio, and will make sure you have a safe, private space before any deeper processing work begins.
